Use Clay Extruders And Dies for Advanced Designs

As you develop your pottery skill, you may become dissatisfied with the symmetry and lines of your pieces. The human hand can only do so much to make a shape symmetrical or clean. There are many tools out there to help shape your pieces cleanly, but one of the most beneficial items is a clay extruder. This article will introduce you to clay extruders and their use.

A clay extruder is somewhat similar to a cookie gun. It consists of a tube to insert clay, a trigger and pressure mechanism to push the clay out, and dies to shape the clay on exit. There are many different types and sizes of clay extruders on the market. You can purchase a smaller unit for recreational pottery, or a larger industrial unit for professional pieces. The size you need will depend on the size of your project.

Clay extruders are typically used to make symmetrical and consistent shapes or designs for pottery pieces. They are frequently used to make handles on pottery pieces or basket weave patterns. You can also press out decals to be attached to your pieces. To use an extruder you first attach your desired die to the base of the extruder. The extruder tube is then filled with clay and the pressure trigger attached. The pressure trigger is pumped until the clay is compressed in the gun. Your pattern or shape is then ready to be pressed out. The pieces will need to be scored and attached together to complete your piece. This is best done by letting the clay shapes rest or get to a leather stage before scoring.

You first clay extruder will usually come with a couple dies. There are some kits available with 10 to 20 dies for smaller extruders. You can always purchase additional dies for your extruder as time goes on. Another option is to make your own die. There are blank dies with instructions on how to design your unique pattern. Your best option may be to start with a smaller complete extruder kit and purchase a larger extruder once youve become familiar with its use.
